Held Hostage

I started the day dragging.  I felt like I had a Super Bowl hangover—not from drinking but from media overload.  So much buzz and so little story really.  Every angle exploited to the fullest.  From Ray Lewis and his baggage to Beyoncé and pre-recorded tracks all the story notes now sounded shrill and deafening. Ready for more important news I tuned into a story that’s been going on for days—a little boy abducted from a school bus being held hostage in a storm shelter.  I read the story and quickly […]

Dream On

It looked to be the best night of his young life and everything was going smoothly.  We left after breakfast to make the four hour drive and arrived in Denver right before rush hour.  The BIG night had finally arrived—Aerosmith live in concert and we didn’t want to miss a thing. I’d promised Chase a couple years back if they ever came to the Mile High City I would take him and sure enough the Bad Boys from Boston finally headed our way.  When I bought the tickets he deemed […]

Autistic Dogs: The Alternative

Last week the Pioneer Woman unknowingly prompted a debate on Facebook amongst my family when my Dad posted a comment raving about her blog.  My cousin who is an accomplished food blogger had to reply.  She is not a fan of Ms. Drummond.  As the Food Editor for BlogHer she has more than one opinion about what constitutes good blogging. Our public disagreement cracked me up. Later, when I found a dime at the grocery store under a display of the Pioneer Woman’s cookbook I wondered what this was all […]

Stereotypes Drive Me Nuts

Yesterday driving was driving me nuts!  It started when I took Chase to school hands gripped to the wheel while oil field workers barreled down the highway to their jobs.  Mornings on I-70 in Western Colorado are like a NASCAR race with trucks.  Roughnecks weave in and out of traffic in a desperate attempt to punch the clock on time. A few hours later coming home from the doctor I must have been going too slowly in my neighborhood because a lady pulled right up on my bumper and honked […]

A Best Friend for Eric

I have a new penny friend whose name is Eric and boy is he a cutie!  With curly hair, big brown eyes, and a smile from ear to ear he’s hard to resist.  He loves animals, has a fantastic imagination, and makes things – cool things just like my son Chase.  In fact, in more ways than one he reminds me of Chase.  Beyond all their similar interests Eric and Chase are not just both artistic but autistic as well.  In my book, that makes Eric a kid I already […]

Autistic Dogs: Just Say No!

The dog is driving me nuts. Not the good kind of nuts like macadamias which bring to mind a sandy shore and Mai Tai’s. Nuts as in crazy and a vacation from the dog is what I would like. With this admission I know some are shocked. A year ago it was nothing but puppy love at our house because Buddy (aka B2) was very cute and cuddly. Back then he floated like a butterfly so now how could he possibly sting like a bee? The simplest way to describe […]
