Bunny Mamas

I was headed home after golf when my friend Bubba stopped me to say hello. Bubba, as his name would suggest, is one of the most gregarious men I know. He could have a funny or heartfelt conversation with a total stranger at a funeral home. His humor and kindness stretch that far. “How are the boys?” he asks. “Oh they’re fine.  Finishing up second semester,” I say with a sigh. “Was it a tough one?” “Oh yeah.” “What you’ve done with those boys is amazing Kären.” “I don’t know […]

Mama’s Girl

Monday, I found myself standing in the garage staring at the refrigerator wondering what I wanted out of it.  I opened the door and stared at the contents and nothing jumped out.  Butter, eggs, or more milk which one?  It certainly couldn’t be the white wine it was only nine in the morning.  I don’t even like white wine so I’m not sure why it’s in there? In the thirty steps between my kitchen and the garage fridge I’d completely forgotten what I was headed to get.  After what […]

A Fan of You

I got myself out of the house at 7:00 AM which is unheard of on a Sunday morning.  I’d set out early to buy the week’s groceries before church.  Luke was coming over after service to watch his beloved Eagles play their second game of the season.   He could watch in his dorm but Chip Kelly’s offense would look better in high def at home and the snacks are free. Not even coffee makes grocery shopping that early easy but I managed.  At the check out the clerk asked me […]

Amazing Love

It was just what the doctor ordered—literally.  Four days at the beach with sunny skies as the backdrop for a conference about finding your subplot in God’s story.  He didn’t know what he’d prescribed was already in the works but when my doctor told me a change of weather would be helpful, I took it as a confirmation I needed to get out of town.  The long cold winter had taken its toll. Leaving his office I was buoyed by the thought, hopeful it would keep me from sinking before […]

Oh Christmas Tree

Last Christmas when I pulled out the decorations I swore I wouldn’t buy any more.  Somehow over the previous twenty-five years I’d acquired more than a department store would need.  That’s probably an overstatement, but it’s safe to say my collection had grown to the point it was time to downsize. This added a lot of time to the decorating effort then, but that investment paid off this year.  After Thanksgiving when it was time to break out the boxes I had the halls decked in record time.  Nothing even […]

Man’s Best Friend

He wakes me up the minute he hears a stir.  I can hear him before I feel his paw reach up and scratch my hand.  Sometimes I play dead just to frustrate him, but he always wins.  Like a babies waking cry pulls a mother from her slumber so it goes with Buddy.  No matter how much I want to sleep-in we both know he’s going to win this battle. As soon as my feet hit the floor his happy dance starts complete with a soundtrack of squeals.  Barely awake […]

Brotherly Love

I was counting my pennies Friday afternoon when a sound from my childhood echoed throughout the house. It was the “thwack” of plastic hitting a dead end. In flashback I saw the 70’s inspired paisley plate sitting in front of me covered with spaghetti. I didn’t know Melamine could pack such a mean punch. When it left my hand and sailed across the room it was like a party popper chock full of noodles that exploded on impact. Had my aim had been better the plate would have hit my […]

My Father’s Daughter

Rushing out the door I caught a glimpse of myself in the foyer mirror and did a double take.  For the first time in my life I noticed I looked just like my Dad.  I left the house laughing that it’s taken me this long to see the resemblance.  It’s not my hair, features, or build it’s my clothes – my sense of style which shouts, “Dad!”  Even the boys noticed it that day.  When I caught up with them Luke said, “You’ve got glasses like Grandpa Davis.”  Chase chimed, […]

Puppy Love

Just last week I started the crazy effort of moving back into my home in Colorado and suffice it to say I have too much stuff! Anytime you move you always have that period of time where you can’t find this or that and you have no idea at the moment where that particular thing is.  You walk around for days looking for something wondering where it is.  For me it hasn’t been the sofa pillows or mixing bowls, that are indeed missing, it’s been our dog Buddy. His absence from this […]

All Dogs Go to Heaven

I swore I would never get another pet after I had to have my cat put down.  I cried for several days and kept apologizing for my tears.  I would say, “She was just a cat”, because I felt embarrassed.  Most animal lovers were very sympathetic but others weren’t as understanding.  Then I had kids and my boys started talking about a dog. My youngest son Chase didn’t have much to say at that point in his life but one thing you could get him to talk about was a dog.  As a result it didn’t take […]
