First To Fight

He had a standard issue camouflage bag.  When he hoisted it into the overhead bin you could see he was nervous.  He sat down next to me accidentally dropping his phone and tickets into my lap because his hands were full. “I’m sorry,” he said. “No worries let me take that,” I said.  “Thank you,” he said handing me his barely worn dress hat while searching for his seatbelt. When he found both straps I noticed he stared at the buckle for a minute.  His hands were shaking.  The guy

Fender Bended

“Um—pardon me Mom,” he said nervously.  “On the way to school something happened to the car.” This sentence, that no parent wants to hear, pulled me off the couch. “What?”  I asked trying to stay calm. “I was coming down the hill and I must have misjudged the distance because I hit the car in front of me.” “What?” I said again with as much impact as his crash.  “On the way to school?” “Come look,” he said. The calm Zen-like vibe that had surrounded my writing evaporated as my

Daniel My Brother

I woke up at a loss for words.  That wouldn’t necessarily be bad as I tend to be wordy, but on a day when you’re supposed to know what to say it’s a problem.  That night at youth group I’d been asked to talk to my friend Daniel about a big change in his life.  It was time for him to graduate out of our group and into other opportunities—something I knew he wouldn’t be happy about. Like his peers he’s glad to be done with school but letting go

An Awfully Big Adventure

“Wow,” I can’t believe he’s 18,” she said.  Her text message a reply to one I’d sent earlier in the day telling her about a surprise party for Chase.  Angela’s boys know him from youth group.  They’d been out of town when we were getting invitations out and I wanted to make sure they knew about it. All the middle and high school kids at church had been invited.  One of the perks of being involved as a leader is that you can influence the schedule a little.  When I’d

Gift

“Do you use Avon?” she asked. “No.” “Why not?” Her question caught me off guard so I didn’t have an answered prepared.  However, I knew that my teenage friend Chloe wasn’t going to settle for half an answer.  Her sister sells Avon so this was too important. “I have really sensitive skin,” I said. “So?” “So, I don’t want to change from what I’m using that works for me.” I could see where this was heading and tried unsuccessfully to change the subject.  Chloe wasn’t going to let that happen

Weird

I dubbed her the Queen of Hyperbole to which my Aunt laughed.  “I just call it like I see it,” she said. “The title stands,” I insisted.  She laughed more. It’s genetic.  If my Aunt is the queen my Father is the king.  My niece is pretty darn good, my cousin a bit guilty, and Chase is working his way up the ranks.  Since I’m the one making the claim I’ll admit, I have a flair for the dramatic as well.  I routinely use phrases like “absolute worst” and “it

Oh Christmas Tree

Last Christmas when I pulled out the decorations I swore I wouldn’t buy any more.  Somehow over the previous twenty-five years I’d acquired more than a department store would need.  That’s probably an overstatement, but it’s safe to say my collection had grown to the point it was time to downsize. This added a lot of time to the decorating effort then, but that investment paid off this year.  After Thanksgiving when it was time to break out the boxes I had the halls decked in record time.  Nothing even

Either Way

She snuck up behind me in line at Starbucks.  It wasn’t until I turned around that I realized it was a longtime friend and fellow tennis mom.  I was surprised three days before the Presidential election to see her any place other than canvassing neighborhoods.  This fall she’s been a faithful volunteer for the Democratic Party working hard to get the vote out.  Since politics doesn’t come up at tennis I’d never realized she was so involved locally. Usually we talk about our kids but today I had to ask

Where There’s Smoke….

It was one of those mornings that your mother warns you about.  I’d left to take Chase to school wearing my pajamas which insured there’d be trouble.  Fortunately, I didn’t have an accident but when I got home and heard air raid sirens going off I thought maybe I was waking up from a bad dream.  I scanned the neighborhood and didn’t see anything out of the ordinary so I headed inside to get another cup of coffee.  That’s when I discovered the noise pollution was coming from my house.

So the Garden Goes

This is my garden and my son.  It’s a small one but he’s a tall one.  The garden stays where it’s planted but the boy is soon to be transplanted. I thought I was doing alright with this.  I’ve heard lots of good advice from friends and have plenty to keep me busy so it was easy to feel “intellectually” ready.  That was until I read the bulletin at church.  The Outreach Team posted a plea for help serving college kids dinner on Sunday nights.  The announcement said the campus
