The DMV and Me

It was the BIG day. My oldest daughter was testing to receive her driver’s license. Like many of young people of this generation, she had chosen to wait to pursue this timeless rite of passage until she was 18. Needless to say, it added to the already growing amount of drama in our family. Having gone through all the wonderful bureaucracy of the Department of Motor Vehicles, I hugged her and prayed for her. “Heavenly Father, help Emily to have your peace as she drives today. Help her to adequately […]

The Lord Needs It

Luke is home for Spring Break which is a treat.  He only lives five miles away but I rarely see him.  I wasn’t sure if he’d peel himself out of bed to go to church with us or not, but he did.  This made me even happier. It was Palm Sunday and when the little kids marched into church singing and carrying their Palm fronds you’d have thought I was watching a Hallmark commercial.  I teared up immediately.  It seems like just yesterday Luke and Chase were young enough for […]

Amazing Love

It was just what the doctor ordered—literally.  Four days at the beach with sunny skies as the backdrop for a conference about finding your subplot in God’s story.  He didn’t know what he’d prescribed was already in the works but when my doctor told me a change of weather would be helpful, I took it as a confirmation I needed to get out of town.  The long cold winter had taken its toll. Leaving his office I was buoyed by the thought, hopeful it would keep me from sinking before […]

Normal Schnormal

She stood up and put her hand out to shake mine.  I hadn’t realized our meeting was in the plan so I quickly tried to hide my surprise. “Hello, I’m Chantell,” she said.  “It’s nice to meet you.” “It’s nice to meet you too,” I said. The lights dimmed and we both sat down with Chase between us.  Now I knew why he’d wanted to see his school’s play.  He’d made a date with his girlfriend. The curtain went up and I tried to focus on the play, but that […]

Held Hostage

I started the day dragging.  I felt like I had a Super Bowl hangover—not from drinking but from media overload.  So much buzz and so little story really.  Every angle exploited to the fullest.  From Ray Lewis and his baggage to Beyoncé and pre-recorded tracks all the story notes now sounded shrill and deafening. Ready for more important news I tuned into a story that’s been going on for days—a little boy abducted from a school bus being held hostage in a storm shelter.  I read the story and quickly […]

Slowly Melting

When I hastily set my empty coffee cup on the catalogs headed for the trash it caused an avalanche. The change I’d found the day before went flying.  I quickly set things right before Chase and I had to leave only to get a second look at the “ice sphere” adorning one of the covers.  I laughed at the absurdity of it. “What’s so funny?” Chase asked. “It’s not worth explaining,” I said as we got in the car. I pulled myself together and we started our drive to school […]

“B” for Blessed

When my phone chimed instead of whistling I knew I needed to check my messages.  It was probably just football news but when you know the sound is a teenager you double check.  After all, that’s why you assign them their own ringtone.  You never know when it could be an emergency. When the message started with “Mom you won’t believe it…,” my heart sank.  I took a deep breath.  This probably wasn’t an update on his beleaguered Eagles football team.  I prepared myself for whatever shocker he had. “My […]

Either Way

She snuck up behind me in line at Starbucks.  It wasn’t until I turned around that I realized it was a longtime friend and fellow tennis mom.  I was surprised three days before the Presidential election to see her any place other than canvassing neighborhoods.  This fall she’s been a faithful volunteer for the Democratic Party working hard to get the vote out.  Since politics doesn’t come up at tennis I’d never realized she was so involved locally. Usually we talk about our kids but today I had to ask […]

10-11-12 —A once in a lifetime birthday for me! Ten is my favorite number because I associate it with God’s perfect order and the way He completes things.  Eleven is my lucky number because so many good things have happened in my life on the 11th.  Twelve speaks to me of God’s elective purposes—the way nothing can thwart His plans for me. All great thoughts for me today especially when I hadn’t noticed how the numbers would roll out this year until I turned the page on my calendar. Then […]

Birdseed Faith

I came home and slumped into my favorite chair.  I needed a time-out before getting dinner ready.  The day had started off well but after the doctor called with my biopsy results I was having trouble keeping my spirits up. As it turns out the bruise-like rash on my face that comes and goes as mysteriously as the wind was something after all.  When I was expecting it was nothing but an irritation to be dealt with, I got the opposite news. Getting blood work done after the bad news […]
