Raptured

Over hash browns and poached eggs Luke asked me yesterday morning if I thought the rapture was going to happen May 21st.  Knowing his little brother has been spooked by all the talk about this at school, I quickly gave him an answer hoping we could move on.  “No Luke, I don’t.”  Without missing a beat he came back with, “Yeah, me either. I don’t think we’re supposed to know when that is because then everyone would just say they believe when they really don’t.”  Luke’s no theologian but he

Every Girl’s Crazy About a Sharp Dressed Man!

He came down the stairs and time stopped.  I knew he’d look great.  At six feet tall without an ounce of fat on him it doesn’t take much.  Earlier in the year his team captain got him used to wearing a shirt and tie by insisting the team dress for success on match days.  This made for a few crazy mornings as we rushed ineptly to tie a half-Windsor but as tennis season progressed, so did his skill and self-assurance.  It was practice that paid off two months later when

The Easter Story

I believe in the power of stories – it’s why I write.  The last few years at church on Easter I’ve been disappointed when the most powerful story of all time has not been read.  Reference is made to it – but the actual story, in the simplest of terms, hasn’t been shared. Not wanting it forgotten I read a very simple version to my kids and every year something different stands out.   This year, I thought about all the ways the message of the Gospel is so easily buried

Bullies Don’t Win

I worried about bullying before either one of my boys stepped on a school campus. Just leaving them in the nursery at church was a stretch for me. My girlfriends worried about their kids too so only the more confident parents labeled me neurotic. This was over ten years ago when bullying wasn’t considered an epidemic. Of course autism hadn’t hit the radar back then like it has now either. I knew my kiddos were different as toddlers, but I didn’t know what to call it. I did know, however,

Waiting for Baby

Like it was yesterday, I remember that seventeen years ago I was waiting for “Baby Luke” to make his arrival in this world and he was taking his time about it! My doctor had calculated a St. Patrick’s Day arrival so the date easily stuck in people’s minds. A week beforehand he’d told me to finish getting ready. I was right on schedule. I went home, looked at the nesting list, and hit it hard. You know important stuff like making sure the dust accumulation on top of every light

Bring Me That Horizon!

I have a love hate relationship with skiing.  Every winter when the white gold Colorado is famous for blankets the slopes, I question my paradoxical feelings.  The boys start getting excited but I feel dread.  Before you know it though, we’re geared up and off we go. One of the issues is the gear.  I can’t think of any other sport that demands so much stuff.  Football players have a lot of equipment but they don’t bind things onto their feet or carry poles.  Packing up takes a lot of effort.  With two teenagers, who would forget

Goldie

Her name is Goldie.  She’s the sweetest little thing with a personality that shimmers.  She’s energetic, bubbly, and very curious.  Yes, that’s right we have a new member of the family.  After some thought I took the plunge with a net into the tank and brought home a goldfish.  She’s not some common carnival prize type fish she’s a fancy orange fantailed goldfish who now lives in an overpriced vase I bought at the Colorado Mountain Fair. Goldie isn’t our first fish.  We started with Woody and Buzz when Luke was in kindergarten but Woody ate

Penny Moments

It’s been a crazy few days around our house.  I knew it would be when the weekend started and ended with a three day tennis tournament.  Granted I’m not the player but every sports Mom knows supporting the athlete takes some effort.  There are schedules to coordinate, meals to be made, bags to be packed, and all sorts of details to be prepared for.  I don’t camp and I wasn’t a Boy Scout but I have adopted the motto “always be prepared” when it comes to a tournament.  If you don’t take a chair you

A Window In Your Heart

There’s a song by Paul Simon called, “Graceland” that has been a favorite of mine for years.  It’s a funky little song on an equally funky CD that for some reason I love.  It came into my life right after my Grandmother died which was a very long time ago.  Like a lot of songs it’s one line in particular that caught my attention.  I can play it over and over and never get sick of it because it means so much to me.  The line is “Losing love is like a window in your

Lady-in-Waiting

My son turned 16 this weekend and to his delight passed the behind the wheel driving test and got his driver’s license.  I’m not nearly as scared about this as people would assume.  He’s a conscientious and cautious driver.  He’s not your average teenager so this is a big accomplishment. Luke is a bit of dreamer and he’s been talking about all sorts of big plans he has related to driving.  Of course he doesn’t have a car yet so I don’t worry too much about some of his more outrageous plans like driving
